ASKEW
HAVING A NICE DAY IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD
The home photographed with the syrofoam cups endorsing "Have a Nice Day"
is a few blocks away from my home, two blocks north of the famous Circus
Liquor clown sign. The clown sign has special meaning for my husband and
myself. When the liquor store first opened, my father-in-law Joseph Mattillo installed the sign for the original owners. I photographed the North Hollywood
home in color infrared. Alterations of the normal landscape hues can be
viewed as beautiful, while others may find it disturbing, or askew. The cups
within days were removed, and the sunflowers have since been cut down.
Askew, awry, aslant all fit into the definition of, "in a turned or twisted
position or direction, or "off the correct or expected." Though drawn to
natural beauty, I am also intrigued by the offbeat, especially when oddities
are achieved and enhanced in infrared.
